Secret Church draws faithful on Friday
Monday, November 7, 2011 | Chris Cutler

This fall's session of Secret Church focused on "Family, Marriage, Sex, and the Gospel." This discipleship event was held on the evening of Friday, November 4 at the Church at Brook Hills in Birmingham, AL and broadcast live via internet to more than 35,000 people at host sites literally around the world.
Secret Church is a ministry of Dr. David Platt, pastor at Brook Hills and author of the Christian best-seller Radical. This was the second time that Park Hill has hosted the simulcast. The experience is designed to give participants an idea of what it is like for believers in persecuted countries to come together in secret to have an intensive time of focused Bible study.
This session of Secret Church highlighted the nation of Egypt, with its government structure very much in disarray following the ousting of long-time president Hosni Mubarek. Participants watched several brief testimonies of the trials and even torture that Christians often have to endure in Egypt -- particularly women and children. Secret Church participants spent some time in focused prayer for the persecuted Church in Egypt and asked God to open up this nation to the Gospel.

Garrick Conner, Discipleship Pastor, says that the event constitutes a real outreach opportunity that builds on the foundation of a long-standing tradition of Park Hill area businesses. "This is a chance for our church to join with our community, providing a safe alternative to trick-or-treating. It also allows us the opportunity to meet many people who wouldn't normally intersect with our regular services and activities."
Susan Bumpas, Children's Minister, said that many parents expressed gratitude for the church providing a fun, safe environment for their children. She explained, "The parents love the safety factor and the fun their kids have getting candy and playing games as they go through the parking lot."
Conner said that Park Hill church members passed out candy, popcorn, and bottled water as children made their way around to the various car trunks and truck beds in the parking lot. He sees the glow-in-the-dark evangelistic tract as ...
